Eucalyptus

Your wood is cracked
Shattered like the land
You now lie upon
Saw tooth ridges
Of wood or rock
Fractured and beautiful
But broken
As hearts and dreams can
Be
At peace
This golden land beguiles
And promises heroic ideals
But even the sun,
With its relentless caress
Destroys things
Radiating our baubles into dust
And the land will shake off
Our unwelcome trespass
If she wants to
Walk lightly here is sound advice
Your roots a hopeless tangle
Before the indifferent azure sky
Their sight a pointer
To an older trouble
The rot set in long before
Your toppling told us you would die
